Overview

This Privacy Policy explains how information may be processed when you use WhatIsMyIP. WhatIsMyIP provides browser-based tools for viewing your public IP address and related network information. It is a static website, and no user account is required to use the IP lookup.

To work, the site makes requests from your browser to independent third-party services. This policy describes what those requests are for and what that can mean for your information.

Information Used to Provide the Service

Public IP and network information is needed to provide the core functionality. Depending on your connection and the services available, the site may display:

  • Your public IPv4 and IPv6 address
  • Internet service provider (ISP) and network information
  • Autonomous system number (ASN)
  • An approximate IP-based location
  • Other network information returned by lookup services, such as organization, domain, or timezone

IP-based location is approximate. It is estimated from IP address data, which can be inaccurate or out of date, and it should not be treated as a precise physical location.

Third-Party Services

WhatIsMyIP relies on external services for IP lookup, geolocation and network information, VPN and proxy checks, maps, and supporting resources. When the site requests this information, your browser may communicate directly with those services.

The relevant services currently include:

  • IP address lookup: ipify, icanhazip, and ident.me. They are tried in order, and a later service is contacted only if an earlier one does not return a usable answer.
  • Geolocation and network information: ipwho.is, ipapi.co, and GeoJS, also tried in order. Your detected IP address is sent to the service so it can return details about that address.
  • VPN and proxy check: HackMyIP, used only when you choose to run the check (see below).
  • Maps: Leaflet and MapLibre GL (open-source map libraries), OpenFreeMap (map style and map data), and the Mapbox right-to-left text plugin, which helps display Arabic and Hebrew place names. The map libraries and the plugin are loaded from the unpkg content delivery network.

Those services may receive technical information that is normally included in an internet request, which can include your public IP address, browser and request information, and other connection metadata. Each service handles information under its own privacy practices and policies. WhatIsMyIP does not control how these independent services retain or process information, so please refer to their own policies for details.

The services and providers used may change as the site evolves, and this policy may be updated to reflect that.

VPN and Proxy Check

The VPN and proxy check is optional. It runs only when you choose to use it. When you do, your detected IP address is sent to HackMyIP, and your browser also makes a request to HackMyIP that lets the service assess the connection it sees.

The result is based on network signals and is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. It may produce false positives or false negatives.

Cookies, Analytics and Tracking

The current site does not intentionally include analytics or advertising tracking scripts.

Third-party resources and infrastructure used to deliver or run the site may have their own technical logging or data practices, which are outside the control of WhatIsMyIP and are governed by their own policies.

Data Retention

This static website does not itself provide user accounts or a user database, and it does not set a retention period for lookup results.

This is separate from any logs kept by the hosting infrastructure or content delivery networks that deliver the site, and from any information kept by the third-party services described above. Those may be governed independently, and how long they keep information depends on them.

The site may link to other websites. Those websites are governed by their own privacy policies, and WhatIsMyIP is not responsible for their content or practices.

Children's Privacy

WhatIsMyIP is a general-purpose network information tool and is not specifically directed at children.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated when the site or the services it uses change. The date of the latest update is shown at the top of this page.
